Cleft Lip and\/or Palate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact cause of cleft lip and palate is unknown, but nonsyndromic cases of cleft lip\/palate may be due to either genetic or environmental factors. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Is Cleft Lip and\/or Cleft Palate Genetic?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 30 gene mutations have been identified as being linked to cleft lip and palate, and parents with a family history of clefts have a higher risk of having a child with a cleft:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If neither parent has a cleft lip\/palate, the likelihood of having a child with cleft lip and\/or palate is approximately 1 in 1,000.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one parent has a cleft lip\/palate, the likelihood of having a child with cleft lip\/palate is estimated to be 5%.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A genetic counselor may be able to provide an assessment of the risk of having a child, or a second child, with cleft lip and\/or palate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 800;\">Are there environmental factors associated with cleft lip and\/or palate?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also many environmental factors that have been associated with increased risk of cleft lip and palate, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to various drugs (anti-seizure medications, ondansetron, diazepam, nitrofurantoin, corticosteroids, methotrexate) during pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal tobacco or alcohol use<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal folate deficiency during pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal obesity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amniotic band sequence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column
